| My New Guilty Pleasure... Legend of the Seeker |

Based loosely on fantasy novel writer Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series (11 books long, each book nearly a thousand pages), Legend of the Seeker is that dorky show you hate to admit you love, but you watch it anyways.
You got nuns with ninja stars, you got chicks in red leather that torture their prey with what clearly looks like dildos (all their missing is a phallic shaped head), once touched by one, it zaps you like a tazer. You got major cleavage going on every single episode by multiple very hot women. You got "300" style action in a Lord of the Rings setting. It's filmed in New Zealand, which always helps, as NZ is a beautiful country for this sort of show. If I got your attention now with the crazier details, I'll jump into the story...
This is basically the hero's journey story, and while very derivative of past show's plots, this one's production values are Lord of the Rings caliber, so that is easily overlooked. It follows a guy named Richard Cyphus, and has the basic setup a lot of fantasy themed novels do. He's the chosen one, or "Seeker" as you will, and it's his job to kick anybody and everybody's ass that stands in his way. Oh and kill the bad guy that wants to enslave the world.
This could have easily been tongue-in-cheek, campy, and super cheesy like my older teenage guilty pleasure, Xena Warrior Princess, but it actually steers WAY clear of that route, and is instead surprisingly intelligent. This is about as serious and adult as mature fantasy gets, and I'm loving it. It stays true to the characters of the book, if not to the story.
I will say the 1st 3 episodes are a bit rough to get through, but after that, it's nothing but goodness once they've got all the exposition out of the way.
The thing I think draws me the most to the show isn't the wizardry, fantasy aspect of it. It's the love story between the 2 main characters. If I had to sum this show up in one word, I would say the word "devotion". They are entirely and completely devoted to one another in all ways, never letting temptation get the better of them (unless magically induced, which the writers do play with at times). The show's main theme being doing the right and mature thing, even if your spit in the face for doing so. I applaud that message.
So there you have it, I'm a total dork, and I don't care. Today is my birthday, so I can say whatever I want lol. |
